Farewell and Thank You, Melanie McDonald

After more than 20 incredible years with Homeward, Melanie McDonald embarks on a well-earned retirement.

Melanie joined Homeward in 2006 and has been a cornerstone of our organization ever since. In her role as Grants and Compliance Manager, Melanie worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our operations ran smoothly and effectively. Her work managing public grants, optimizing the use of funds, and overseeing key administrative functions like risk management, payroll, contract support, and regulatory compliance was vital to Homeward’s success. It is work that allowed the rest of our team to serve hundreds of people experiencing homelessness with confidence and integrity.

Throughout her career with Homeward, Melanie helped guide the organization through periods of growth and change. When she first started, Homeward had a small team, and everyone “wore many hats.” Over the years, as Homeward expanded, Melanie’s deep commitment to excellence and stewardship helped strengthen our systems and paved the way for sustainable impact.

At her retirement celebration — affectionately themed “Time Flies!” in honor of her favorite pastime — team members reflected on what Melanie has meant to Homeward. Her steady presence, thoughtful leadership, and warm spirit have shaped not only the work we do but the culture we share. We’ll especially remember how her joy for birdwatching (binoculars often close at hand) became a symbol of the enthusiasm and positivity she brought to our work every day.

Melanie’s legacy is one of dedication, compassion, and care: qualities that have allowed Homeward to serve our region’s most vulnerable neighbors with dignity for decades. While we will miss her immensely, we are so grateful for her years of service and the many ways she has strengthened our mission to prevent, reduce, and end homelessness.

Please join us in wishing Melanie a joyful, restorative, and bird-filled retirement. Thank you, Melanie, for everything.

Rayne is a MSW student at VCU's School of Social Work and this year's Coalition Support Intern at Homeward. We asked for her perspective on the connections between social work and homeless services now that she's been with us for a few months.

Iain De Jong of Org Code Consulting shared a video today “Want to help with homelessness? Do this. Not that.” This is one of the best summaries of how all of us can be a part of addressing the homelessness crisis in our community. The video is only 7 minutes, and Iain is always worth listening to but here is my summary of what touched me.
