Reflecting on BPC 2021: Landlord Engagement

Jun 07, 2021

Lead Care Coordinator, Jen Johnson, reflects on a session thinking about landlord engagement.

During the Best Practice Conference put on by Homeward, I was able to assist with the questions and answers during the Landlord Engagement Seminar. With the current housing shortage and the values of homes rising, landlord engagement is even more crucial than ever before. This session was filled with tons of input and questions from homeless providers interested in how they can better interact with landlords and build relationships.

I reached out to Hana Yun, COO of ACTS who was a participate during the seminar to see what was her key take away from the session. She said, “We always have seen landlords as business people not necessarily as human service people and I think sometimes for human services people it takes a second for us to process that.” Hana continued to say that It was refreshing to be reminded that we are all human. During the session, Patrick McCloud and Michele Mosby who were both presenters, did a great job reminding us to think like a landlord and how they need to do what’s best for themselves and to keep that in mind when we interact with them. I also followed up with the session’s mediator, Tracey Hardney-Scott who did a fantastic job engaging with our presenters, to find out what she was hoping participants received clarity on. She said, “I wanted the participants to get a clear understanding of how landlords think and how they operate their business. That although the term landlord is generic there are various levels of real estate management and ownership. We have to target those that serve our population and operate on concern of people than profit.”

As we continue to move through this pandemic and get to the other side, landlord engagement will forever be a well needed skill our community needs. Overall, the session was enlightening and optimistic and provided the participants with point in the right direction as we continue this great work.
